What is an Intimacy Coordinator?
When your script contains nudity, sex, kink, or any kind of physical intimacy or “hyper exposure” it is best practice to bring an Intimacy Coordinator on to your project.
An Intimacy Coordinator will act as a liaison between actors & production to ensure that consent is obtained and maintained for all acts of intimacy & that proper safety protocols are followed. In addition, ICs review nudity riders, modesty garments & will support the Director with choreography for intimate scenes, as needed. ICs protect performers’ boundaries so they can deliver their best work.
Intimacy Coordinators have a positive impact on tv and film productions:
IC provides choreography that heightens believability & protects performer boundaries for intimate scenes
IC coordinates with production and actors on the nudity and simulated sex riders
IC establishes and ensures continued consent from actors to both the action performed and the likeness seen throughout the process of production & supports efficient production flow.
IC ensures adherence to proper closed set protocol based on SAG-AFTRA guidelines
IC collaborates with departments, such as costumes, make-up and props on nudity garments, barriers, and prosthetics
IC’s bring cultural competency and can advocate effectively and with sensitivity for performers of shared identities and lived experiences.
